All Women are Free to Choose (AWAFC) is a grassroots organization with the sole purpose of rallying circumcised women around the world to combat the negative impact of global anti-FGM campaigns and propaganda. Our goal is to empower affected women and girls in our own communities to make choices for themselves regarding their bodies, cultural practices and lived experiences. We have a right to either uphold or abandon any practice that involves our bodies without undue pressure from within our societies and especially from without. In other words, as individual women and adolescent girls, we have a right to celebrate our aesthetic traditions or to reject those aspects that we do not want for whatever reasons. This means that we support proposals for changes in our customary practices of female circumcision that are in line with legally accepted global practices including male circumcision and female genital cosmetic surgeries. We are against any and all attempts to single out and stigmatize circumcised African or non-western women and girls as "mutilated". We believe the concept of FGM is a harmful psychological projection of the beliefs of others about gender, patriarchy and ambivalence regarding the female genitalia. AWAFC is the first global, grassroots movement to challenge racial and gender inequalities in Anti-FGM campaigns and promote true equality among women of African descent and the world over. We believe in affected women listening to one another, working together and honoring one other's voices.
