All Women are Free to Choose (AWAFC) is a global grassroots organization with the main purpose of empowering marginalized women and girls in various parts of the world. Our key emphasis has been combatting the negative impact of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) campaigns and propaganda. Our goal is to empower women and girls through practical education about our bodies and sexuality as well as on the cultural and religious origins or meanings of various bodily practices including female (and male) circumcision. We advocate for age of consent policies that align minor forms of female circumcision with similar practices that are accepted for other women, men and children around the world.
We believe that women who uphold female circumcision are entitled to equality with other women and men in the world who support similar bodily practices for whatever reasons they choose. We believe that women from communities that uphold female (and male) circumcision have fundamental rights to self-determination, religious freedom and individual dignity. While we teach our immigrant communities about the importance of adhering to laws and policies against FGM in countries where they reside, we also aim to dispel exaggerated FGM myths by providing affected women and girls with reliable scientific research and empirical evidence about the various female circumcision procedures.
We believe that our communities have a right to celebrate female circumcision just as we do male circumcision - as an important cultural, aesthetic and religious tradition that positively defines our experiences of gender and sexuality. While we understand that some affected women identify with the termininology and experience of FGM, we believe that for the vast majority of us the the notion of FGM is psychologically harmful and a violation of our fundamental rights. AWAFC is the first global, grassroots movement to challenge racial and gender inequalities in anti-FGM campaigns and promote true equality among women of African, Asian, indigenous American or Muslim descent around the world. We believe in affected women listening to one another, working together and honoring one another's voices.
